Parent Volunteers

Update: We are not consistently monitoring the volunteer request forms at this time. If you are interested in volunteering for winter season, please email the appropriate chair (arts@medinapta.org, coding@medinapta.org, athletics@medinapta.org, languages@medinapta.org)

Our afterschool programs can only be successful with the help of our parent volunteers. We will need one parent volunteer per program. The parent volunteer for a program will get priority registration for their child in that same program. Please note that the registration fee is not included- you still must pay the fee for the class!

Volunteer Requirements:

  • The volunteer must be a parent or legal guardian of the student that will enroll in the program.
  • The parent volunteer must be a PTA member. It is not sufficient for your spouse/partner to be a member, so we recommend purchasing a family membership to ensure you are a member.
  • The parent volunteer must commit to volunteering at every class in the season. This is typically a commitment of 7 or 8 classes for the season.
  • The parent volunteer must have a BSD background check. To obtain a background check, visit here and select "Parent or Legal Guardian Volunteer."

To request to be a volunteer, please fill out our request form, and someone will get in touch with you:

Coding

As the Medina PTA Coding Program's inaugural year, students will learn how to code with the FIRST® LEGO® League curriculum, taught by professional instructors and BSD staff. Medina PTA Coding Program will be doing projects based on this year's season challenge without participation in the events.  All robots and lego kits are funded by Medina PTA (pending approval). If there is interest in forming teams and participating in the division challenge events, please email: coding@medinapta.org and we will look into the possibility and feasibility for this year.

FIRST® LEGO® League

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together. Our three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.

FIRST® LEGO® League Season Challenges

Every year, FIRST® LEGO® League releases a new Challenge based on a real-world, scientific theme.

Starting with Discover, children are introduced to the fundamentals of STEM while working together to solve fun challenges and building models using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.

As participants progress into Explore, children will take their background knowledge of STEM and put it into practice as they work in teams to design and build robots using the LEGO® Education SPIKE Essential.

Once they are ready to move into a competitive setting, they join Challenge and apply their STEM skills combined with critical thinking to work with a team, build a robot, and compete in an exciting, mission-based robotics game.

BEHAVIOR: Parents and students are expected to behave respectfully to each other and the coaches/instructors. If we feel you or your student’s behavior is disruptive, or you or your student are consistently disrespectful, we reserve the right to withdraw your student (after sufficient warnings) with no refunds. You further agree that any violent behavior may result in immediate withdrawal of your child from all afterschool programs with no refund. Any withdrawal due to disrespect or violent behavior may also affect your ability to register for future afterschool programs.

PICK-UP: Unless your child is staying at Medina Elementary with the Boys & Girls Club after the program, you understand that you must pick up your child on time. Repeated late pickups may result in withdrawal from the program with no refund, and you may forfeit the ability to register for future afterschool programs.

ABSENCES: If my child will not be at an afterschool program, I will email the appropriate chair (arts@medinapta.org,  athletics@medinapta.org, coding@medinapta.org, languages@medinapta.org) prior to that day’s class start time. I understand that two unexcused absences may result in removal of my student from the program(s) without refund.
